Design & Colour

These beanies are Fair Isle knitting. Fiar Isle knitting originated on the remote island of Fair Isle - a tiny jewel in the ocean lying midway between the Orkney and Shetland Islands to the north of Scotland in the UK, st the point where the Atlantic Ocean meets the North Sea. One of the many objects found in Fair Isle home is a good graph book which contains the familys collection of knitting patterns used as the basis of decoration for garments. It is a traditional technique used to create patterns with multiple colours. This technique gained considerable popularity when the Prince of Wales (later Edward V111) wore Fair Isle jumpers in public in 1921.

Allison who knits these beanies to perfection learnt the techique while she was working on Fair Isle as a young nurse. Alison says that knitting kept her company during the long dark winters.
